About The Nigerian Army

The Nigerian Army is undisputedly the largest military organization in the country and of course Africa. It is a part of the Nigerian Armed Forces established in 1956 from the Royal West African Frontier Force by the British Colonial Government. Nigerian Army became fully Nigerianised after independence in 1960.

The statutory roles and responsibilities of the Nigerian Army are outlined in section 112 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended). Its primary responsibility is the defence of the country’s land territory against internal and external aggression. Other roles of the Nigerian military include land warfare. The Nigerian Army’s motto is ‘Victory is From God Alone’. The Nigerian Army exists under the Ministry of Defence and is headed by the Chief of Army Staff, COAS who is answerable to the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces. Career Overview in the Nigerian Army

Officers in the Nigerian Army are in different category. There are Commissioned Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers. Also recruitment into the force is either through the Direct Short service or Short Service or recruitment.

Different Between Direct Short Service, Short Service and Recruits

Direct Short Service Commission: made up of people who have graduated from conventional tertiary institutions such as Universities and Polytechnics with B.Sc. and HND degrees. They become Commissioned officers after their Training which is not combat focus as they are posted to the officer corps and units such as administration, finance, band, legal services etc. They are instantly given the ranks of Lieutenant after induction into the Army.

Short Service Commission: officers in this category are also graduates from tertiary institutions who are trained for combat in the Nigerian Army. Unlike officers in the Direct Short Service Commission, they are posted to battle front after training.

NDA Cadets: the Nigeria Defence Academy Graduates are trained as officer cadets and commissioned after five years of intense military and combatant course into the Officers Corps with ranks of 2nd Lieutenants

Recruits: they are the rank and file soldiers also known as constabulary in military terms trained mainly for combat or to be used in war times.

After training the officers in the various categories are posted to different departments, units, command, formations, divisions of the Nigerian Army according to their disciplines and specialties. They are also deployed for international engagements namely: ECOWAS Monitoring Group (ECOMOG), UN Peacekeeping Forces etc. and many other national operations like MESA, Operation Crocodile Smiles etc. and land border patrol.

Nigerian Army Recruitment Requirements

Applicant must be single and Nigerian citizen by birth and must possess National Identity Card/ NIN or BVN.
Applicant must be medically, physically, and psychologically fit according to Nigerian Army standards.
Applicant must be free of any criminal conviction by the court of law.
Applicants must possess a valid birth certificate endorsed by the National Population Commission. Hospital or Local Government Council or valid age declaration.
All applicants must have WASCE / GCE / NECO / NABTEB / Trades Test / City Guild Certificate. waec result
An applicant must not be less than 18 years and not more than 22 years for non-tradesmen/women while tradesmen/women must not be more than 27 years as at the commencement of training by 31 Jan 2022.
Measurement in height at least not less than 1.68 meters and 1.62 meters tall for male and female candidates respectively.
Applicant must possess a valid certificate of state of origin.
